The Tradition

DBFest

Every year, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the day of Qu Yuan’s suicide with races in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe and the U.S. High school, collegiate, recreational adult and professional adult teams from all over the world travel to large races to gain recognition, celebrate their victories and partake in festivities with other teams. While the races themselves are usually the main attractions at festivals, celebrations often feature food vendors and live entertainment as well. Chinese tradition also compels many to make, eat, and throw “zhong zi,” lotus-wrapped sticky rice, into the water in memory of Qu Yuan.
